Growing up, I was fortunate to take piano lessons, but even more fortunate that I had an instructor who was my neighbor down the street and understood me. I looked forward to walking down the dirt road once a week to sit by her side. I grudgingly had to perform what I had been practicing all week, and learn the current week's lesson. And then, I got to be me. I got to explore. I got to create. I got to be free, to express myself, to make something external that had been internal. She gave me the space to play to my heart's content and would give feedback, affirmation, suggestions, and overall, just listen and appreciate and be there. And she would do the same, letting me sit and watch as she would play a piece she practiced or created.
When I record my music, there is no sheet. There's not often a plan. Maybe a chord in mind or a sound I want to hear, but then I let the music take me on the journey it intends for me. I explore, I create, I am me, I am free. I hit record and then I play. In the moment, nothing else matters. No obligations. No bills. No noise. Just be. You will hear what sounds like mistakes in the recording. A chord progression gets out of sync. A errant flat shows up when it shouldn't. I get a little ahead of myself and it can fall apart a little. Those stay in the recording because they were meant to be there. That was part of the journey. You won't find many straight lines in nature. What you don't see is the smile on my face or me likely swaying back and forth with my headphones on as I'm in a place of joy and peace. But I do hope you can feel that when you listen. And I hope you can feel joy, peace, comfort, and freedom.
"Desert Sunrise" is a collection of original works from 2005-06 . This was my first venture in writing and recording music. Due to limitations, these are raw, unedited songs, where I hit "Record" and began to explore. My favorite is "Almond Eyes", which I wrote for my wife when we started dating.
The playlist below are a few of the songs I recorded for my Dad while he was in the hospital. It gave me great peace as I could still speak to him, even if he could not speak back. I wanted to share as tribute to his beautiful life and the love he's given all of us.
